The Maple Run Ghost League is as old as the course for which it is named. Led for many years by Gene Long, in 2003 the league was handed off to me, Bill Tucker. I could not do this alone, and thanks to my wife Anne, I don't have to. She's the brains of this outfit.
I should also take a moment to thank other members of my famly who also help out, my brother Dan & his wife Marg, sister Susan, nephew Mike & his wife Kathy. Dan & Mike besides being father & son, are also league members.
This is a non-profit league. All funds taken in by the league are spent on the season ending banquet and prizes. We also accept donated prizes to be awarded at our dinner. From time to time we have some money left over, these funds are donated to the local food bank or other charity. Lately, it has been the American Cancer Society.
The Ghost League is not a "formal" league. It's first and formost about having fun and playing some golf. Our "average score" scoring system isn't true handicaping, but it works for us.
FAQ
1. Why is it called the "Ghost League"?
a. Because the matches each week are random "ghost" matches. In other words, you don't know who you will be playing each week, so you are playing a "ghost" oppontent each week.
2. You missed my scores last week - I didn't get my card turned in, (or) I put my card in the wrong file tray, (or) I just played after you picked up the cards. Can you add my scores to last weeks matches?
a. Sorry, in all cases the anwser is no. Once the matches have been run and scores posted, it wouldn't be fair to the other players to go back and change the matches and outcomes. Make sure you play BEFORE each Friday, and drop your card into the ghost league file tray. (the only exception to this is during the first 2 weeks each year. Because we don't run matches until the end of week 3, you can turn in a late score during this period and have it count, but not AFTER the end of week 3)
3. I'm going on vacation this summer for X number of weeks, will I just miss those weeks?
a. If you know you are going away, you can play those weeks "in advance". Just play the round(s) front or back nine that you'll be missing, mark your cards for the weeks you'll be gone, and we'll add your scores for you.
4. I pay $15.50 each week to play 9 holes in the league. How much of that money goes to the league?
a. None. Those fees are collected by the course. It is a discounted rate for league members. The only money the league gets is your $15.00 membership fee and those funds go toward the end of season dinner and prizes.
